What Is Actually Known About the Dental Bone Graft Market — and What Is Not
Eighteen estimates of the 2025 dental bone graft market span $328 million to $4.41 billion. Which figures rest on audited documents, and which do not.
The dental bone graft substitute market is a category for which no audited, independent measurement exists. What circulates instead are estimates from commercial research firms — eighteen published figures for the global market that, for 2025 alone, range from $328.14 million (Fortune Business Insights, 2026) to $4.41 billion (The Business Research Company, 2026), a spread of 13.4 times. This article separates figures that rest on checkable documents — audited financial statements, disclosed transaction values, U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) records — from the outputs of undisclosed models. Every number carries its publisher and year; the compilation dates from September 2026.
Key takeaways
- Eighteen estimates of the global market span $328.14 million (Fortune Business Insights) to $4.41 billion (The Business Research Company), both for 2025; two firms measuring graft substitutes alone differ by 1.75 times, $0.68 billion (MarketsandMarkets) against $1.19 billion (iData Research).
- A xenograft share of exactly 48.2% appears in Grand View Research (2022), SkyQuest (2022) and Data Bridge Market Research (2024).
- Grand View Research projected $1.0 billion by 2026 in January 2020; current estimates for 2026 are $350.25 million (Fortune Business Insights), $0.72 billion (MarketsandMarkets) and $0.93 billion (Mordor Intelligence).
- Straumann Group moved its estimate of the regenerative market from CHF 0.7 billion (24 November 2025) to CHF 1.3 billion (17 February 2026) within three months.
- ZimVie Inc. reported dental sales of $449.7 million for 2024 ($266.8 million in the United States) and ARCHIMED bought ZimVie at about $730 million enterprise value in October 2025; no official count of U.S. dental implants or bone graft procedures exists.
Why do the estimates disagree?
Part of the spread is scope: Fact.MR, Custom Market Insights and the second Grand View Research report bundle membranes with grafts, Persistence Market Research measures guided bone regeneration, and iData Research publishes $1.19 billion for graft substitutes and $2.33 billion with other dental biomaterials, both for 2025. Scope does not explain the whole gap: MarketsandMarkets ($0.68 billion) and iData Research ($1.19 billion) both measure graft substitutes alone and differ by 1.75 times; setting aside the two highest figures still leaves $0.33 billion to $2.33 billion.

Four features argue against reading them as measurements.
Precision is out of step with the spread. Reports state $974.86 million (Precedence Research) or $1,098.48 million (The Insight Partners) to the hundredth of a million while disagreeing by an order of magnitude.
One publisher carries different figures at once. MarketsandMarkets shows $0.72 billion for 2026 on one page and $1.3 billion for 2024 on another; the iData Research U.S. report moved from $589 million and a 5.3% CAGR (2023 edition) to above $650 million and 6.8% (2025 edition).
Numbers migrate between publishers. SkyQuest reproduces a whole set of Grand View Research indicators — xenograft 48.2%, North America 38.0%, Asia-Pacific CAGR 10.9%, dental clinics 76.3% — and Data Bridge Market Research carries the same 48.2% for 2024.
Earlier forecasts did not hold. Grand View Research’s release of 21 January 2020 projected $1.0 billion by 2026 at a 9.1% CAGR; no current estimate for 2026 exceeds $0.93 billion.
What do the segment breakdowns show?
The breakdowns by material type cannot be added up: xenografts are named the largest segment by Grand View Research (48.2%, 2022), Precedence Research (above 49%, 2025) and Data Bridge Market Research (48.2%, 2024); allografts by Mordor Intelligence (55.10%, 2025) and MarketsandMarkets (2025); synthetics by Fortune Business Insights (58.62%, 2026) and Fact.MR (2025); autografts by The Insight Partners (2024). Socket preservation ranges from 24.0% (MarketsandMarkets, 2025) to above 34% (Precedence Research, 2025), and dental clinics hold 77% (Precedence Research) against dental hospitals 52.0% (MarketsandMarkets). At least half of these reports appear to distribute a predetermined total across segments rather than measure them.
What does the single manufacturer’s estimate say?
Straumann Group is the sole manufacturer to publish a size for the category. Its Annual Report 2025 states that the company has “revised the market size upward to CHF 1.3 billion” from a previously assumed CHF 0.7 billion. At the Capital Markets Day of 24 November 2025 regeneratives were a CHF 0.7 billion market with a share of about 15%; the FY2025 (17 February 2026) and Q1 2026 (29 April 2026) presentations give CHF 1.3 billion and a share below 13%, and an Annual Report infographic puts it below 10%. The estimate doubled within three months without an explanation of what changed in the category boundary.
Which figures can actually be verified?
Audited financial statements
ZimVie Inc., in its full-year 2024 results of 26 February 2025, reported third-party dental sales of $449.7 million, of which $266.8 million were in the United States; biomaterials are not broken out. No major manufacturer discloses bone graft revenue as a separate line: Straumann does not separate biomaterials, Henry Schein gives no figures, and Geistlich Pharma, a private company, reports single-digit growth without amounts. Precedence Research ($266.55 million) and Grand View Research ($272.96 million) size the entire U.S. graft substitute market for 2025 at the magnitude of a single company’s U.S. dental revenue, implants included.
Disclosed transaction values
ARCHIMED completed its acquisition of ZimVie on 20 October 2025 at $19.00 per share, an enterprise value of approximately $730 million (Form 8-K, U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission). KKR invested $250 million in Henry Schein on 16 May 2025 for about 12% of the shares and two board seats. Isto Biologics, backed by Keensight Capital, bought NovaBone Products from Halma for $60 million on 4 August 2026; Halma had paid $97 million in January 2020. All of these buyers are private-equity investors, not strategic manufacturers.
FDA records
The openFDA 510(k) and device-identifier databases, queried on 31 August and 2 September 2026, hold 286 clearances under 21 CFR 872.3930 across the three dental bone grafting material codes — 231 synthetic (LYC), 40 animal-source (NPM), 15 human-source (NUN) — and 1,679 device identifiers in commercial distribution. Dental clearances peaked at 67 in 2006–2010 and number 19 for 2021–2026 to date; in the 24 months to 10 September 2026 the dental codes gained 10 clearances but 202 new listings. Of 35 dental clearances in 2016–2026, 15 (43%) went to U.S. applicants; recent entrants are GC America (K253317), Bonalive of Finland (K253883), Hudens Bio (K251818) and Medpark (K253723) of Korea, Full Golden Biotech of Taiwan (K243745, K244006) and Shenzhen Dazhou of China (K241186), plus three Geistlich clearances (K242510, K251613, K251786).
How many implants and graft procedures are performed in the United States?
No official statistic exists: no count of dental implants placed or bone graft procedures performed is published by the American Dental Association, the CDC or CMS. The American Academy of Implant Dentistry states on its website that 3 million people in the United States have implants and that the number grows by 500,000 a year, with no date and no cited source.
The sole peer-reviewed prevalence data come from NHANES, analyzed by Elani and colleagues in the Journal of Dental Research (2018): among U.S. adults with missing teeth, implant prevalence rose from 0.7% in 1999–2000 to 5.7% in 2015–2016, with a projection for 2026 between 5.7% and 23%. No national count of graft procedures exists; the single public ratio is the iData Research statement of 2 July 2025 that roughly 25–30% of bone graft procedures use a barrier membrane. The practitioner base is documented: the ADA Health Policy Institute counts 205,088 dentists working in dentistry in 2025, among them 7,482 oral and maxillofacial surgeons, 5,480 periodontists and 3,568 prosthodontists; what share of the 161,733 general practitioners place implants or graft is undocumented.
Why we wrote this
This article appears on a website operated by Meddent Innovative Concepts, developer of ALGINAGRAFT™, a bone graft technology under development; its author is the inventor of that technology, holder of the related patents and founder of the company, which therefore has a commercial interest in the category described here. ALGINAGRAFT™ has not been cleared or approved by the FDA, has not been evaluated in clinical studies and is not available for sale; nothing in this article concerns its properties. We compiled the review because market sizes stated to two decimals and implant counts without a source circulate in lectures, business plans and product literature as if measured, and a surgeon weighing any statement about the category, including future statements from this company, should know which figures rest on documents.
